Stuffed Animals

The Liberians LOVE stuffed animals!  They are everywhere.  In the back of car windows, tied to the front of motor bikes, hanging from huge trucks side mirrors, young girls have them tied on their backs with lapa's ... They regularly get a washing and are hung to dry.  Still funny to see!

A Closer Look

Because the "Bat Tree" is right by the American Embassy it is hard to get a close up picture.  I was driving "down" Benson Street (away from the embassy) so was able to get closer shot.  Still CREEPY!

Cashew Fruit

These are cashew fruit.  The nut is at the bottom of the fruit.  The shell is toxic and the nut if green is toxic as well.

Old vs New

The burned out building on the left belongs to the political party that lost the war.  They will not sell it or repair it.  It stands in stark contrast to the  Central Bank building that looked just as bad before they started the renovation.  It gives me hope for the country.  Some are willing, able and ready to repair and move forward,  others not.

Which Color Would You Choose?

Since before Christmas people have been painting their homes and
businesses. It is something that is done every year after the rainy
season (we found out it is the law). It is nice that is coincides with
Christmas to make everything look so nice and clean for the holidays.
While driving up to Garndersville we passed these three buildings that
stand side by side. They were so bright and colorful we thought they
were worth a shot.

Note: Since there are very few street or road signs and no house
numbers, we find our way with landmarks. For example, the green house by
the football pitch or the dirt road after the purple building supply
store. Since December all of our landmarks have changed color making it
a game of hide and seek - again!

Libassa Ecolodge

The couples were able to arrange an overnight stay at Libassa Ecolodge (libassa.com - check it out!).  It was a great break in a very busy schedule.  Even though the resort is 30 minutes out of Monrovia (on the way to Marshall) it seems a world away.  We almost felt like we were on a deserted island, similar to Gillen's Island. Does that date me or what!!!

A buffet breakfast came with the accommodation. It was a mix of American and Continental.  A fishing canoe is the buffet table!  They had fresh pineapple juice which was DIVINE!! I could not stop drinking it.  You just can't make it that fresh at home.  They cut it off the plant and juice it.  No transport, sitting in freezers or waiting in the store for purchase.  WOW!!!

We stayed in the Elephant Palavar
Our Room!
Our Bathroom - notice the bamboo faucet. The water is solar heated.
Our private patio.
Beautiful beach for as far as the eye can see.  No people, no trash, no poop.
Still talking "shop."
Dinner service was slow (90 minutes), company was great!
Trying to decide whether to take a plunge or not.
Lounging by the pool waiting for the Elders.
(L to R) Miles 2, Miles 1, Kirkham's, Berrett's, Busby's (expats working for Cheveron), Hezsetlines.
Dining room. Canoe buffet table.
Time to leave.
