Bat Season

The mango season is coming and the fruit bats have arrived.  Sometimes they will cover a whole tree.

  1. Would you add your bat photo as a citizen-science observation to the AfriBats project on iNaturalist?:

AfriBats will use your observations to better understand bat distributions and help protect bats in Africa.

Please locate your picture on the map as precisely as possible to maximise the scientific value of your records.

    Many thanks!

PS: these are straw-coloured fruit bats (Eidolon helvum)

  2. Thanks a low for accepting the invitation! May I ask you for 2 additional actions:
Please update the identification as Eidolon helvum - this is easily done by clicking on "Agree" next to my ID at the bottom of the page:

Please also add your observation to the AfriBats project (think of the latter as a collection of observations within iNaturalist). You should see an invitation, where clicking on "Accept" will add it to the project.

    Many thanks again.

  3. Are these the same straw coloured bats that caused Hendra virus outbreaks in horses in Australia and do they cause Ebola outbreaks in Africa?
